EMV Shift: Should You Wait Till 2020 by Richard Browne

September 20, 2019There is a strong possibility that some of us will be out of power for an extended period and using portable generators. Here are 4 IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS for your GENERATOR to everyone about using a generator. Please keep these
1. Never run a generator in an enclosed space or indoors. – Most generator-related injuries and deaths involve CO poisoning from generators used indoors or in partially enclosed spaces. – Before refueling, turn off a gasoline-powered generator and let it cool.
2. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts can ignite. – Allowing the engine to cool also reduces the risks of burns while refueling. – Avoid electrical hazards.
3. It’s best to plug in appliances directly to the generator. – If you must use an extension cord, it should be a heavy-duty one for outdoor use, rated (in watts or amps) at least equal to the sum of the connected appliance loads. – Don’t attempt to backfeed your house.
4. Double Power OFF at Breaker Best practice is not to do this but we are aware that some of you have made cords to feed your entire house using a dryer outlet. If this is something that you are planning to do make sure that you have turned the main power to your house off at the breaker or by removing the entire FPL can (if possible). If this is not done and power is restored while backfeeding through the dryer outlet you will have major damage to all of your electronics and house power.
Please be safe during this troubling time and good luck to all of our Guardian family and their families.
